"Lavender Fields" 6x6 inch oil on gessoboard
This painting was done on location while at Washington Island in Door County, Wisconsin. I was in a field at the historic "Island Dairy" which is home to one of the largest lavender farms in Wisconsin. The rows of lavender bushes were in stark contrast to the golden fields beyond. I love the yellow and purple combination.

"In the Field" 6x6 in oil and cold wax on gessoboard
This was a painting I did on my painting trip to Washington Island in Door County, Wisconsin. I went out to a small airfield. There were planes taking off and landing on the grass runway. I liked the little red "windsock" that was off in the distance. This painting was done in oil paint mixed with cold wax as the medium and applied with a palette knife. After the painting was complete I heated it with a heating element to give the painting an encaustic feeling.

"Hay Bales at End of Day" 6x6 in. oil on gessoboard
This was a painting I did on a painting trip to Washington Island in Door County, Wisconsin. There was not much sunlight left when I started to paint so I had to paint fast. I wanted to capture the simple shapes and the rhythm of the long shadows. I used a limited palette of yellow and violet.

Approaching Storm 6x6 inch oil and wax on gessoboard
This is another painting from my painting trip to Washington Island in
Door County, Wisconsin. I mixed my oil paint with Dorland's wax medium
and applied it with a knife. I like the atmospheric effect the knife
achieved for both the water and sky.
A storm was coming, but as quickly as it formed, it dissipated without any rain. On the island the weather changes very quickly. We painted on location with our cars not far from us so we could make the dash to cover if necessary!!

Last Day of Pleine Air Painting
The weather has turned blustery here but last week I got to go outside to paint with my friend Sallie. It was one of those wonderful, beautiful fall days. The leaves were still on the trees and we painted at a park along Lake Michigan. Pleine air painting is like camping. You really have to have all the right equipment and you have to be able to set it up and break it down pretty efficiently. Not to mention you also have to stare at the scene before you and figure out a way to capture it on a small, empty canvas. That is the hard part.
Until next season....

Spoon Divider
Looking down on the miniature limes, the spoon just seemed to "wall off" the glass bottle. I loved the way the lemon, limes and the spoon were all reflected in the clear glass bottle.
I thought this was a very rhythmic composition.

Another in the cherry tomato series. This time with two lemon friends.

Chloe 6x6 inch oil on gessoboard
This pet portrait was done of Chloe, my son and his fiance's German shepherd. She has a lot
of beautiful black markings around her face and ears. Plus her left ear
has a little notch from an injury. I think it adds to her personality.

Clear Blue Jar 6x6 inch oil on gessoboard
6x6 inch oil on gessoboard
I loved the transparency of the blue vase so that you could see the small silver spoon through the glass. And, the onion was just standing by at attention nearby the tomatoes. See this small painting and others at my website below:

Oscar the mini dachsund 6x6 inch oil on gessoboard
This is a portrait of a miniature dachshund named "Oscar." He has a lot
of energy so I had to shoot my reference photography as he was taking a
sun bath and looking out the front door. I like how the sun was shining
on his coat.

"Blue Eggs" 6x6 inch oil on gessoboard
This painting was from a photograph I took in my kitchen. The afternoon
sun was coming in the window and reflecting off the cut glass. I laid
one of my blue and white dish towels underneath and it have a blue cast
to the whole setting.
